Thanks to its favourable east-facing geographical location, Apulia has become a strategic crossroads in the Mediterranean.

The region has been renowned since ancient times for its intense cultural and trading activities, as the numerous archaeological remains from different epochs can attest.
Byzantines and Longobards (VI - IX centuries A.D.), Swabians and Normans, Anjovins, Aragonese, the Spanish and the French all staked their claim to the region at one time or another through-out the centuries, each drawing up their own administrative divisions.
Much more recently, Apulia entered into a period of sustained economic development. The '60s and '70s were a time of diversification of the local assets, with the transition from an economy that was mainly dependent on the primary sector towards an economy where there was space for state-sponsored large-scale industry, SMEs and an increasingly active tertiary sector in support of local business communities.
The region's readiness to enhance and reinforce its wealth of environmental and human resources has fostered new forms of collaboration, participation and cooperation with Mediterranean and Balkan countries regions, as well as in regions further afield.

Apulia's involvement in the pan-European corridors projects is a sign of the region's intention to become a leading player in global development for which diversified, effective communication highways are being put in place to allow goods, people, ideas and energy to circulate more easily and efficiently. >>>>> To Be Continued
